Welcome to this edition of the United Soccer Coaches Communities series! In this issue, we’re proud to highlight a leader from each of our Coaches Communities—groups built on mentorship, advocacy, and connection that unite coaches across every level of the game. These communities are where ideas grow, friendships form, and shared experiences strengthen the heart of soccer. As you read, you’ll discover how each leader is amplifying voices, fostering inclusion, and inspiring meaningful change within our game. We also invite you to join us at the 2026 United Soccer Coaches Convention in Philadelphia, January 14–17, where the Coaches Communities will host a series of engaging events, socials, and conversations. Come connect with fellow coaches, celebrate our shared passion, and experience the power of community in action. Together, we’re shaping the future of the game—one coach at a time.

This exciting new program celebrates the creativity, skill, and sportsmanship that define high school soccer. Each month, we’ll spotlight the most outstanding plays submitted by coaches from across the country!

Greg Davidson, United Soccer Coaches Board Member

VP of Membership and Communities

What makes a community special? It might be your school community, where you proudly wear your school colors and logos. It could be the neighborhood you live in—full of local shops, churches, schools, parks, and social gatherings. Or it might be your family, where you share meaningful moments and celebrate holidays together.

At United Soccer Coaches, our Communities reflect those same values. While we are all coaches first, our Communities offer a space where we can connect through shared pride, social engagement, unique perspectives, and collaborative problem-solving—with people who truly understand our journey.

We believe there’s a place for everyone. With United Soccer Coaches, you can find one—or more—Communities where you belong, contribute, and enhance both your coaching experience and your membership value.

Ashu Saxena, API Coaches Community Chair

Asian/Pacific Islander Coaches Community

The Asian and Pacific Islander Coaches Community (APICC) exists to actively support, mentor, and develop coaches and related personnel of API heritage and their allies. We work to raise awareness and foster understanding, appreciation, and connection for the greater good of the game. Founded in 2021 with five members, we have now grown to more than 250, supporting one another professionally and personally. We aim to provide a safe space for open communication, mentor younger professionals, collaborate with other coaches communities, and leave a meaningful legacy. For me personally, United Soccer Coaches has represented excellent education, support, and service since 1994. The annual Convention truly feels like home—a place to learn, network, belong, advocate, and celebrate. As Mahatma Gandhi intimated, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Join us at CV26 to connect, learn, and serve together.

Shaun Smithson, Faith-Based Coaches Community Chair

Faith-Based Coaches Community

The Faith-Based Coaches Community exists where faith and coaching come together. This community provides space for coaches to gather, connect, and grow by exploring how faith influences leadership, relationships, and purpose in sport. Many faith traditions connect belief to action, but few spaces invite coaches to discuss how that translates to their day-to-day experiences. Our community offers encouragement, honest conversation, and practical insights that help integrate faith into leadership and coaching. Whether you are new to your faith journey or deeply rooted in it, you’ll find belonging and inspiration here. At the United Soccer Coaches Convention, join us in the Coaches Community area, attend the Layton Shoemaker Lunch on Friday, or participate in our session, “Becoming the BEST U so we can become the Best Us,” on Saturday at 9:30 AM. Together, we can grow in faith and purpose as we serve our athletes.

High School Coaches Community

Progress, partnership, and purpose define the High School Coaches Community, which continues to gain unity, visibility, and influence within United Soccer Coaches. This year marked a milestone as our Referee Statement of Support was approved by the Board of Directors, emphasizing that referees are “the third team on the field.” Their professionalism ensures fairness, safety, and respect—the same values we strive to model. Supporting referees strengthens the spirit and integrity of the game. We’re also proud to present the Special Topics Diploma at the Convention, offering professional development and practical learning for coaches nationwide. Through new initiatives, shared resources, and meaningful connections, our membership continues to grow in strength and purpose. Together, we are creating a thriving network of high school coaches who support one another on and off the field. We are not just growing a game—we are building a movement that elevates all.

We provide a welcoming space for mentorship, connection, and professional growth, where members share experiences, resources, and success stories that strengthen representation within the broader soccer landscape. Through coaching education, advocacy, and community outreach, we build bridges, honor diverse traditions, and ensure Latino representation continues to grow. LGBTQ+ & Allies Coaches Community

The LGBTQ+ & Allies Coaches Community is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment where every person feels valued and supported. Our leadership team works to ensure that each voice, story, and experience is heard and respected. Megan Ostrelich, our Education Vice Chair, continues to lead our adaptable education program designed to help clubs create welcoming spaces for all players, coaches, and staff—without pressure to be perfect. At the 2025 United Soccer Coaches Convention, we had an incredible turnout for our roundtable discussion and look forward to an even larger presence at the 2026 event in Philadelphia. We are also launching Community Chats, which provide open platforms to share ideas, collaborate, and encourage one another through inclusive dialogue. Whether discussing business, recruitment, or advocacy, all are welcome. Together, we continue to build a stronger, more connected soccer community for everyone.

Joe Palacios, Veterans, Active Military & Affiliates Chair

Veterans, Active Military & Affiliates Coaches Community

I am honored to be part of the United Soccer Coaches family and represent the Veterans, Active Military & Affiliates Coaches Community. With over a decade of experience in leadership, employee relations, and organizational design across Fortune 500 companies and the federal government, I bring a people-first approach that emphasizes fairness, inclusivity, and innovation. My work at Amazon, Lowe’s, and the U.S. Department of Labor focused on empowering teams and creating environments that balance empathy with performance.

I have been involved in the game on many levels and I am now helping to coach my son at a recreation level. I am eager to support veterans and active military members in developing leadership skills, building connections, and creating meaningful pathways in coaching and beyond. I want to build upon the foundation established by our original Chair, Garon Taylor-Tyree. Together, we can continue to build a strong and supportive network that uplifts those who serve and lead.

Women Coaches Community

The Women Coaches Community is dedicated to connecting women and educating coaches of women and girls. We believe in the power of supporting one another in a field where women are still underrepresented. Our members have been breaking barriers for decades—earning awards, serving as United Soccer Coaches Presidents, and leading on the Board of Directors. Collaboration drives our work as we partner with other coaching communities, recognizing that many of our members bring diverse experiences to the table. Our initiatives, such as the Special Topics Diploma focusing on the Women’s Game, Moms Who Coach, and family-friendly Convention access, promote inclusion and growth. The Convention events, including the Women’s Social and Breakfast, offer connection and inspiration, while scholarships and awards celebrate excellence.
