KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 6, 2020) — A pair of goalkeepers were honored as the United Soccer Coaches Players of the Week for their performances last week. North Carolina junior Alec Smir and Virginia Tech freshman Alia Skinner were announced as the winners by the association on Tuesday.
Smir (Greensboro, N.C.) helped the Tar Heels get their season off on the right foot, posting a shutout in a 2-0 season-opening win at Duke last weekend. It was his ninth career shutout and his eighth in his last 19 starts.
Skinner (Fleming Island, Fla.) registered her first collegiate win and shutout in a 2-0 victory over No. 14 Pittsburgh in her only action of the week. The freshman recorded a season-high 12 saves, including seven in the first half. Her 12 saves are the most ever for a Virginia Tech goalkeeper in an ACC game and the third most in the last 23 years of Hokie women’s soccer.
Each Tuesday during the college regular season, United Soccer Coaches selects a men’s and women’s Player of the Week based on nominations from schools and conferences. Nominations are due every Tuesday by 10 a.m. CT to be considered.
