KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Dec. 5, 2025) – United Soccer Coaches has announced the selection of Oguchi Onyewu, as the newest recipient of its Honorary All-American Award. Onyewu will be presented the award at the association’s All-America Ceremony taking place at 1:00pm on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, during the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Phialdelphia, Pa.

Oguchi Onyewu is a Nigerian American soccer player born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. With a storied tenure of over 10 years as a key defender for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Onyewu graced the global stage in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. Over his illustrious 15-year career in Europe, he showcased his talent with revered clubs such as Newcastle United (England), AC Milan (Italy), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal), and Malaga CF (Spain). Fluent in three languages—English, French, and Spanish—Onyewu channels his fervor for education and youth advocacy into impactful philanthropic endeavors. His unwavering faith fuels his commitment to charitable causes across diverse sectors.

When learning of this honor, Onyewu said, “I am honored to be named an Honorary All-American by United Soccer Coaches and to be recognized at the 2026 United Soccer Coaches Convention this January. This distinction means a great deal to me, as it reflects the journey I’ve been fortunate to take in this game—from representing the U.S. Men’s National Team for over a decade, to helping strengthen the pathways and standards that support players today. Expanding his influence beyond the pitch, Onyewu founded ONYX Elite, LLC, a multifaceted company specializing in sports performance, fitness, physical therapy, and corporate health. Most recently appointed as the Assistant Sporting Director for the U.S. Soccer Federation, he spearheads initiatives to enhance national team competitiveness and promote inclusivity at all levels of the sport. Prior to his role with U.S. Soccer, Onyewu held positions as Sporting Director of Orlando City B and Secretary General of R.E. Virton in Belgium.

Armed with dual bachelor’s degrees in Language (French) and International Business from Clemson University, he possesses a U.S. Soccer Federation B Coaching License, and various other professional certifications. Beyond his athletic and administrative endeavors, Onyewu has shared his insights as a media personality and sports analyst, contributing to platforms such as CBS Sports, ESPN, and TNT.

Each year, the United Soccer Coaches Honorary All-America Award is presented to a person or persons who have brought particular distinction and/or attention to the sport of soccer through their efforts within and beyond the boundaries of the sport.
