Julio Serrano Named New Latino Coaches Advocacy Chair
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 11, 2019) — United Soccer Coaches is excited to announce Julio Serrano as the new Chair for the Latino Coaches Advocacy Group. In his role as chair, Serrano will build a team from the Latino coaches’ community to identify the needs of the membership and advocate on their behalf. He will also represent Latino coaches as a member of the United Soccer Coaches Advocacy Council.
Serrano was selected from a pool of nearly 30 applicants for the position. He brings a vast range of coaching experience and has served as a coaching education instructor with several state associations. He is currently a member of Illinois Youth Coaching Staff and is the Director of Coaching at Heart of the City in Waukegan, Ill. An association member since 2016, this is his first official role with United Soccer Coaches.
“I’m excited to get started in this role as the Latino Coaches Advocacy Chair. As the son and spouse of Mexican immigrants, I feel I can personally speak and relate to many issues involving our Latino communities,” said Serrano. “I am committed to supporting the association’s purpose and to become a driving force as we move forward in helping our membership reach their goals. I look forward to helping facilitate, create and sustain learning environments in which all coaches feel that they belong and that they can learn and thrive.”
Prior to joining Heart of the City, Serrano spent time as an assistant coach at Cañada College and Director of Match Analysis for JASA RWC in Redwood City, Calif. He also spent time as a Youth Development Coach with the Palo Alto Soccer Club in California and was the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Coach at Half Moon Bay High School in Half Moon Bay, Calif.
“I’m thrilled to have Julio Serrano join the United Soccer Coaches Advocacy Council,” said Council Chair Sue Ryan. “This is an exciting time for the Latino Coaches Advocacy Group and I feel that with his personal and coaching experiences, Julio is the perfect choice to lead this group forward.”
The Advocacy Council consists of representatives from the 13 different United Soccer Coaches Advocacy Groups plus the Advocacy Council Chair. The role of the council is to advocate for issues in the game and the association that affect the membership. The council provides accountability and oversight for the Advocacy Groups.
“Advocating for coaches is a core pillar of United Soccer Coaches,” said CEO Lynn Berling-Manuel. “It’s a happy coincidence that Julio’s appointment also takes place as we honor the legacy of the Latino community in the United States during Hispanic Heritage Month. We are excited to have him in this role.”
Any coaches looking to get involved can meet Julio, and the other Advocacy Group Chairs at the Advocacy Hour Social at the 2020 United Soccer Coaches Convention in Baltimore. Advocacy Hour will take place on Friday, Jan. 17 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Julio Serrano es nombrado nuevo Presidente del Consejo de Abogacía de Entrenadores Latinos
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 11, 2019) — United Soccer Coaches se complace en anunciar a Julio Serrano como el nuevo Presidente del Consejo de Abogacía de Entrenadores Latinos. En su papel como presidente, Serrano formará un equipo de la comunidad de entrenadores latinos para identificar las necesidades de los miembros y abogar por ellos. También representará a entrenadores latinos como miembro del United Soccer Coaches Advocacy Council.
Serrano fue seleccionado de un grupo de casi 30 candidatos para el puesto. Aporta una amplia experiencia de entrenamiento futbolístico y ha servido como instructor de educación de entrenamiento en distintas asociaciones estatales. Actualmente es miembro de Illinois Youth Soccer Coaching Staff y es el Director de Entrenadores en Heart of the City en Waukegan, IL.
“Estoy emocionado de emprender en este papel como el Presidente del Consejo de Entrenadores Latinos. Como hijo y esposo de inmigrantes mexicanos, siento que puedo hablar y relacionarme personalmente con muchos asuntos que involucran a nuestras comunidades latinas”, dijo Serrano. “Me comprometo a apoyar el propósito de la asociación y a convertirme en una fuerza motriz a medida que avancemos para ayudar a nuestros miembros a alcanzar sus metas. Espero poder ayudar a facilitar, crear y mantener entornos de aprendizaje en los que todos los entrenadores sientan que pertenecen y que pueden aprender y prosperar”.
Antes de unirse a Heart of the City, Serrano trabajó como entrenador asistente en Cañada College y como Director de Análisis de Partidos de JASA RWC en Redwood City, California. También fue entrenador de desarrollo juvenil en el Palo Alto Soccer Club de California y entrenador de fútbol femenino en Half Moon Bay High School en Half Moon Bay, California.

El Advocacy Council consiste de representantes de los 13 diferentes Consejos Abogacía de United Soccer Coaches más el Presidente del Consejo de Abogacía. El papel del consejo es abogar por los asuntos del juego y de la asociación que afectan a los miembros. El consejo proporciona responsabilidad y supervisión para los Consejos de Abogacía.
“Abogar por los entrenadores es un pilar fundamental de la asociación de United Soccer Coaches”, dijo la directora ejecutiva Lynn Berling-Manuel. “Es una feliz coincidencia que el nombramiento de Julio también se lleve a cabo durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana cuando se honra el legado de la comunidad latina en los Estados Unidos. Estamos emocionados de tenerlo en este rol”.
