Eight Student-Athletes named United Soccer Coaches Players of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 4, 2018) – Student-athletes from all three NCAA divisions, as well as two representatives from the junior college ranks, have received Player of the Week honors from United Soccer Coaches, the association announced on Tuesday.

NCAA Division I Men: Alex Willis (Northern Kentucky)
NCAA Division I Women: Nonie Frishette (Wake Forest)
NCAA Division II Men: Jamie Hickey (Georgian Court)
NCAA Division II Women: Sofia Lewis (Minot State)
NCAA Division III Men: Lucas Geib (Lake Forest College)
NCAA Division III Women: Gabby Gillis (Christopher Newport University)
Junior College Men: Bryan Ortega (Cerritos College)
Junior College Women: Zoe Ellis (Holmes CC)

Northern Kentucky freshman forward Alex Willis (Faversham, England) had a hand in all eight goals scored by the Norse in three wins last week. He scored five goals and dished out three assists. Wake Forest senior goalkeeper Nonie Frishette (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) recorded 16 saves in a pair of shutout victories over Michigan and No. 5-ranked Penn State.

At the NCAA-II level, Georgian Court sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Hickey (Dublin, Ireland) recorded nine saves in shutout wins over No. 13 Adelphi and No. 16 West Chester, while Minot State sophomore midfielder Sofia Lewis (Minot, N.D.) scored three goals and dished out three assists and had both game-winners for the Beavers.

Among the NCAA Division III nominees, Lake Forest junior forward Lucas Geib (Gurnee, Ill.) contributed four goals and two assists for 10 points in a pair of season-opening wins. Christopher Newport University senior midfielder Gabby Gillis (Leesburg, Va.) scored five of her team’s eight goals and also had an assist for 11 points. She scored the game-winner in both games, including a 2-1 upset over No. 9 Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Rounding out the Player of the Week honorees is Cerritos College freshman midfielder Bryan Ortega (Compton, Calif.) and Holmes Community College freshman forward Zoe Ellis (Brandon, Miss.). Ortega scored four goals and dished out two assists as Cerritos opened the season 2-1. Ellis scored four goals and dished out two assists as Holmes opened the season with a pair of victories.

Each Tuesday during the college regular season, United Soccer Coaches selects a men’s and women’s Player of the Week for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and Junior College competition based on nominations from schools and conferences. Nominations are due every Tuesday by 10 a.m. CT to be considered.
