2017 Convention: An LGBT and Allies Success

Los Angeles was THE place to be this year. The annual United Soccer Coaches Convention crackled with excitement and energy - and the LGBT and Allies coaching community was in the middle of it all.

Every year we hold a “Conversations” meeting. This year’s attendance was the highest ever, with a diverse mix of youth, high school, club and college coaches. The talk ranged from general coaching questions, to specifics about individual situations.

The LGBT and Allies coaching community sponsored an interactive workshop on the importance of diversity and inclusion for coaches. We also participated on a panel about “Creating Diverse Leadership in Your Club.”

We heard plenty of positive feedback on our Diversity and Inclusion online coaching course (see the right side of this page for more information). Many people had already taken it, and loved it -- but some did not know about it. We continue to spread the word about this great initiative.

One of our projects for this coming year is an LGBT and Allies Awareness Weekend. Teams will be invited to wear rainbow laces on their soccer shoes, showing support LGBT players and coaches. Plans are still in the works!

United Soccer Coaches truly values our LGBT and Allies group. They look to us as advocacy leaders, and respect the work we’ve done. Their support is crucial.

So is yours! If you’d like to get involved in any way, we’re happy to have you. Please email dwoog@optonline.net for more information.

2016 Convention

The LGBT Soccer Coaches and Allies Community had an active – and very productive – time at the 2016 United Soccer Coaches Convention in Baltimore.

A “Breaking the Silence” workshop explored the many ways coaches can create safe, welcoming environments for all athletes. More than 100 participants heard an all-star panel that included Robby Rogers of the LA Galaxy, the 1st openly gay male team sport athlete in North Athlete; Anson Dorrance, legendary University of North Carolina and US Women’s National Team coach; Nevin Caple, LGBT activist, and Atticus DeProspo, former out player at Cornell University. The event was moderated by ESPN’s Kate Fagan.

Dorrance spoke strongly of the need for all athletes to feel comfortable with their teammates and coaches. He stressed that his team’s core values include celebration of all diversity, and noted that they discuss those values explicitly twice a year. Rogers cited the importance of the casual but warm acceptance by his own teammates and coaches. DeProspo said he was inspired to come out by Rogers’ example. Caple added that while every athlete and situation is different, the need for support is constant. Wells Fargo sponsored the high-powered event.

The LGBT Coaches and Allies Member Group also held a roundtable discussion in Baltimore, participated in the United Soccer Coaches Member Group social, and discussed plans for the coming year.

Upcoming projects include:

  • Adding diversity training to all coaching courses
  • Reaching out to allies, and offering them tangible ways to declare their support for LGBT coaches and players
  • Planning for the 2017 convention, with a big name in attendance, an interactive workshop, networking events and more
  • Providing safe space for LGBT coaches and players – including support, as needed
